Tourism is the main source of Belize's economy, which has helped combat poverty with the plethora of jobs available. With the natural beauty spread from corner to corner of Belize, it isn't surprising that over a million people travel to Belize in the calendar year. Belize has the second largest ocean barrier reef in the world, next to Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
Other famous attractions include a variety of Mayan ruins. There are 15 archeological sites in Belize. One of the largest, and most well known is the the Caracol ruins. Fortunately, many of these sites have been preserved despite the colonization and conquest that overtook Belize and made it into the country we know today.
English is necessary for Belize due to their extreme dependency economically upon tourism. Most of the outpour of tourists arrive from English speaking nations such as America, Canada and the UK due to not needing a visa to visit and the close distance.
